Selio Medical, a revolutionary medical device company, has found the solution to a major unmet clinical need for patients going through lung cancer diagnosis.

The Guinness Enterprise Centre, home to Selio Medical, officially launched Health@GEC. Children’s Health Ireland, St James’s Hospital and its Academic Health Science Campus announced its formal collaboration with the GEC on December 5, 2022. This collaboration centres on innovation in the health system, entrepreneurship & innovation training and clinical collaboration to foster optimal patient outcomes. The partnership brings a new opportunity for GEC clients in the health cluster to bring their innovative solutions to live clinical environments, patients and practitioners. Colm McGarvey, the CEO & Co-Founder of Selio Medical, was part of the panel at the event.

“The GEC is a fantastic location for Selio Medical, providing us with all the necessary support and facilities required to develop our device. We are very excited about the launch of this collaboration with St James’s Hospital and Children’s Health Ireland Academic Health Science Campus. We are delighted to build on our existing collaboration with St James’s Hospital as we bring our technology through regulatory approval and into the hands of the clinicians to improve the lives of lung cancer patients.”

More Information about Selio Medical

Every 30 seconds someone dies of lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Selio Medical has developed a way to protect patients as they go through the high-risk diagnosis process. Lung biopsy is the gold standard method of diagnosis, but 1 in 3 patients undergoing a lung biopsy suffer from a collapsed lung, also known as a pneumothorax. This large unmet clinical need has inspired Selio Medical to adopt a unique approach by providing pneumothorax protection before the biopsy even takes place.

The Selio Sealant System is a single use, prophylactic device, comprising a percutaneous delivery needle together with a novel biodegradable hydrogel sealant. The proven patented technology seamlessly integrates with the current standard of care and enables the clinician to pre-seal the access route into the lung before the biopsy. The Selio Sealant System provides pneumothorax protection, thereby allowing the patient to safely return home on the same day as their procedure. This innovative device will improve the lives of lung cancer patients and by preventing unnecessary hospital admission for treatment, will also significantly reduce healthcare costs, which would typically result in an excess of $15,000 in the case of a lung collapse.

In June of 2022, Selio Medical was awarded €2.5 million funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme. This latest funding will support growing the team in Ireland and further technical development as it prepares for market launch.
